Case Histories
Following are case histories that illustrate just some of the ways Rosner Patient Advocacy Services has turned around stressful situations to create positive outcomes for patients and their families.
Home for Christmas
The frantic parents of a 33-year-old, who lived far from her, contacted us over the Christmas holiday. Their daughter had experienced an acute manic reaction to drugs administered during a Covid illness that landed her first in the emergency room and then, against her will, in a psychiatric facility. The latter was planning commitment proceedings and the family couldn’t reach anyone so they could explain the cause of the young woman’s behavior.
It took us 48 hours from initial contact with the psychiatric facility to a successful resolution. The service immediately reached the attending physician, clarified the patient’s medical background, and suggested a discharge plan based on stabilizing her and releasing her to her family. That is what happened.
The Right Medicine
A 70-year-old man was kept in a psych hold at a Connecticut emergency room because airport security, that sent him there, thought he was suffering from alcohol withdrawal. In fact, he’d forgotten his medication at home causing symptoms that mimicked alcohol withdrawal. His sister contacted us. Once we reached the emergency room and explained the error in diagnosis, the patient was given the appropriate medication and stabilized. We subsequently arranged for his discharge a few days later.
Singular Specialists
A physician who suffered from a traumatic brain injury in a car accident needed Botox injections for her debilitating headaches but required they be done in a nontraditional setting. She could not tolerate a facility with elevators or many computers. We found a leading neurologist who took her case and complied with the required protocols. She continues to see this physician after three years during which time we have identified other specialists for her.
